Workaround was posted in ubuntu bug 300476:

 Appending
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
"ClientSideWithRender"="N"
 to wine registry did the trick.

Sure enough.  So I guess the Render extension is busted with the
nvidia-96 drivers on Intrepid?
