I since then mass effect is suffering from cripplingly slow framerates on the first "Press a key" plane screen, menus and general game play. The game intro and jump-gate splash screen run at normal rates. I've tried reinstalling steam in a clean prefix with only mass effect in steam but the same result. No other steam games are effected and run at full FPS.
