I installed the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats (FileFormatConverters.exe) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4a... This works file for Word. After running xlsx importer once succesfully on an .xlsx file (first, a convertor is run, and then the file opened), I tried to open regular .xls files again. Excel 2000 does not open .xls files from nautilus anymore by double-clicking on them. I can, however, still drag xls files into excel, and they open fine. Uninstalling Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack does not fix the problem. Apparently a Nautilus or registry association is changed.
