Menu transitions is when the game transitions from "Menu -> Cutscene" or "Menu -> Game", "Game -> Menu", so on and so forth. I'm grouping both games into the same issue because both games, as far as I know, use the same engine, and both exhibit the same bug. While FIFA World Cup 98 does not have a demo version, FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 does: https://archive.org/details/FIFAWC98 FIFA World Cup 98 freezes right after the splash screen of the game (where the game transitions from the splash screen to a cutscene). FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 freezes right after the game tries to start a friendly match. I did try using older Wine versions (the earliest version I tried was Wine 5.15), but it seems that this bug has been present for a long time. The bug can be worked around by using "taskset -c 0 wine ..." when starting the game, using "WINEDEBUG="+thread wine ..." or setting the kernel parameter "maxcpus=1". It isn't a full workaround, the freeze still happens sometimes, but it does work well enough that you can get into a game and play the game.
