I did a couple more tests, and when using a Windows version Vista or Windows 8,
the app still works fine here (without any patches). Could it maybe be related
to the fact that Windows XP didn't have kernel support for SecurityCookies yet
(as far as I know), and the app somehow explicitly checks that?
