I did encounter this error in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, running any command thusfar.

Comment #1 seems to resolve:
$ sudo sysctl -w vm.mmap_min_addr=0
To make this setting permanent, add this line to /etc/sysctl.conf:
vm.mmap_min_addr
