Please install closed source video driver. I don't think that's the advice we want to give people. Even as a test in attempt to troubleshoot the problem? If it's not the driver Possibly, in some cases, but I don't think it should be the first thing to try. For one, installing fglrx and removing it again can result in a broken GL setup if it's not uninstalled properly.
