With Adobe Reader 3 (16-bit) this occurs when opening the bundled ACROBAT.PDF but not the LICENSE.PDF.
That warrants another bug, since the OP's issue occurred on startup, not on opening a specific file. (In reply to comment #14)
With wine version 1.1.32 (shipped with Fedora) I no longer have this problem. Perhaps this bug should be closed now.
And thanks for everyone who helped solve this bug, I can throw away my customized version of wine now :)
