To be honest I have no clue about "portingkit". But one requirement of patching
wine is to install from source. I would guess that portingkit uses a binary
(non-source) distribution of wine, and therefore patching would not work. 

If you have enough disk space, I think you can try installing it both ways.

In generell homebrew is a great way to manage packages and software on your
mac, so you should try it anyways :P
