I asked because I saw some richedit fixmes the log from comment #9.
If riched20 is set to native,builtin rather than native, that would cause a crash. See http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14980#c17. So I triple checked to ensure riched20 is set to native for word.exe, so that shouldn't be the problem. Also, the only other workaround I'm using is winetricks ie7. Are there more workarounds that I need to use that you know of? Thanks!
