OK, "i686-redhat-linux-gnu-pkg-config --cflags freetype2" was the magic command
to figure out what is missing.
For me it was bzip2-devel.i686 and pcre-devel.i686 (I had only
pcre2-devel.i686).
Unclear why this worked with c7a97b5d5d56ef00a0061b75412c6e0e489fdc99
reverted...

Now if works so I'm assuming this is a NOTOURBUG but we need to document the
dependencies.
