(See the attached images) It is possible to run the game with xephyr (Xephyr -br -ac -noreset -screen 960x600x16 :4) in a lower color mode, which fixes the issues. It seems 32-bit color causes issues with the game. Sadly, xepyhr is not available on all platforms.
