I just discovered that this bug depends on the screen resolution. The game works normally for me when the resolution is set to 1280x1024 (my max). Note that the in-game settings menu will change the campaign map resolution, but the battle map resolution can be changed as well by editing the preferences.txt file in your installation directory.
I initially had the bug too, then fiddled around with resolutions and it went away. Not that anything is fixed, a clue perhaps? I have the same version (Gold Edition CDs). Mandriva 2010; fglrx 8.68.2/Catalyst 9.12; 'vanilla' Wine 1.1.36 32-bit from src.
