You will NOT ENCOUNTER this bug if you check "Emulate Wine Desktop" in winecfg
That would suggest you don't have the correct modes setup in xorg if it crashes/doesn't work without the virtual desktop. Check the output of xrandr and compare it to the resolution that is set with the virtual desktop.
