The game uses binary effects. Somehow it expects to get compilation_errors = NULL. I suspect it passes an uninitialized value for compilation_errors to D3DXCreateEffect(). Thus D3DXCreateEffect() probably needs to set compilation_errors to NULL. No longer crashes on start.
