I don't see these failures on Debian 9:
$ ntlm_auth --version Version 4.5.12-Debian
What is your version? Can you attach your /etc/smb.conf here?

Bug is not present in 4.7.0 on my Manjaro machine, though, so it looks like this was fixed upstream.
