From within an Office 2007 app, going to "open file", and switching the explorer View to "preview", no Office app except Word will actually generate a preview (and at that, only with .doc/.docx files - not rtf, for instance).

You need to save the workbook explicitly with a "preview" image to have it shown in the dialog. 1) open the workbook/sheet 2) click the 'Office' button, click 'Prepare' and then click 'Properties' (Excel displays a set of properties just above the worksheet) 3) click the down-arrow next to 'Document Properties' and choose 'Advanced Properties' (Excel displays the Properties dialog box) Make sure the 'Summary' tab is selected. 4) select the 'Save Thumbnails for All Excel Documents' check box at the bottom of the dialog box. 5) click on 'OK' to close the 'Properties' dialog box. 6) save the workbook. The preview image should now be shown in 'Open' dialog. Unless you can prove that Excel 2007 on Windows behaves differently (screenshots, videos) I suggest to close this one as 'invalid'. Files saved in Excel under XP display the previews fine in both Wine and Windows. Files saved in Excel under Wine just display the blank rectangle in both Wine and Windows. I don't know maybe it's workbook/content specific (test other examples?). OP reported "preview is unavailable." which is clearly not the case since I have a preview image displayed if properly created. If your preview doesn't completely work for whatever reasons it's likely a different problem. You could start with providing various workbook examples as test-cases to make this bug still useful (change the summary accordingly). It just displays a blank rectangle for the preview in both Wine and Windows on my system.
