[Bug 7334] Workaround for lack of 8bpp (8-bit, 256 color) support on 24bpp displays

I've got a new laptop that can only do 24bpp mode (toshiba satellite a200 ah6/Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller), if I'm interpreting the output of xdpyinfo correctly. The laptop won't run games that do run on my older desktop machine, and it looks like this bug is the reason. I have tried the Xnest and vnc tricks, but they complain about being unable to do 8-bit graphics as well. I'd really appreciate it if this could work again.
