Reverting commit ff92a993ad63f6ed94cd1dd873aa578ba46c5979 fixes the black screen issue. The problem doesn't occur when the game is launched in windowed mode (in the configuration file 'd3dparams.ini' the option 'StartWindowed' must be set to 1.) No demo version is available.
