Sizes of textures and stand-alone surfaces must be multiples of the format's block size for DXTN formats. Either native d3dx9_36 or native d3dx9_40 also works around the issue. Let me know if you need further tests or logs.

I removed all wine content via winetricks, installed the demo.
I couldn't see the issue mentioned here.
I played the demo until I got into trainstation.

If you install native either via winetricks or by allowing the game to install the DirectX redist you won't see the bug.
