It does looks like a driver issue at first sight. Is there any chance this is due to missing s3tc support?
Well I have installed the libtxc-dxtn from Xorg Edgers on my Ubunru 12.04 so I can have s3tc support and still the same problem. It turned out to be the game executable and the game data were different versions, possibly caused by an incomplete upgrade. I uninstalled the game through 'Uninstall Wine Software' and then installed from a full download from http://download.angrybirds.com/ .
