The length of time is random but it has usually been running for a number of hours before it does so. Starting the application again works fine, so it's more of an annoyance than anything. Eventually it hits a ceiling and simply dies. It seems to be a 2 GB ceiling but I'd have to confirm that for certain. Valgrind, apparently, won't work. A multiarch thing. However, I assume this is because my original tests were on a 32-bit machine and I'm now using a 64-bit machine, so waiting for the exit could take days or weeks.
