[Bug 23468] New: Age of Empires 2 and 3 fail to run
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23468 Summary: Age of Empires 2 and 3 fail to run Product: Wine Version: 1.2-rc5 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: jameslinton(a)hotmail.com Both games install fine, but will not run at all. I am new at all this and apologize for not doing a regression test. I will however eventually figure it out. I have run both age of empires 2 and 3 on previous versions of wine (probably around 1.1.23) without this problem so i am guessing a regression. I'm use Nvidia drivers version 195.36.24 also have tried reinstalling and upgrading drivers to the latest version. no luck, same error. terminal spits out james(a)james-desktop /media/Tera_/Programs/Games/Age Of Empires II/Age of Empires II $ wine EMPIRES2.EXE fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 110 (SPI_GETSHOWIMEUI) fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x32d730,0x00000000), stub! err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found 1280x1024x32 @0! Hi Dan are you referring to available video modes my card can display? Windows 7 right-click desktop (Screen Resolution, Advanced Settings, Adapter Tab,"List all Modes") this lists a large number of modes in a scrolling list. I cannot copy and paste the 'scrolling' list. I've had a good browse online to find a command line to print this information to .text file but cant seem to get anywhere -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23468 --- Comment #11 from James <jameslinton(a)hotmail.com> 2010-07-05 07:36:52 --- Ok i have played around a bit and come to the following conclusion. I can play both these games in Windows under dual view setup ONLY if I am using two monitors using 15-pin DE-15 VGA connectors. (if i use the DE-15 VGA connection on say the first monitor and either the hdtv, composite or s-video connection on the second monitor it will NOT work) BOTH screens need to be set to 1024 x768 and also the game must be configured at 1024 x768. If you change the monitors both to 1280x1024, and the game to 1280x1024, one would assume this too would work... It does not. To recap. These games will only work under Windows in dual-view if both monitors are connected via 15-pin DE-15 and set at 1024x768 along with the games configured at 1024 x768. No matter what the resolution is configured like in Ubuntu, it will not work. Gives error message "Could not initialize graphics system. Make sure that your video card and driver are compatible with DirectDraw." -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Ok final edit, i worded that wrong .............These games will work in windows under dual-view without severly interfering the second monitors resolution, only if both monitors are connected via 15-pin DE-15 and set at 1024x768 along with the games configured at 1024 x768.. The game will play no matter what on display one in dual view but the only way of having a stable second monitor displaying say a movie or anything correctly is as explained above and of-course in Linux it wont load on either monitor :( -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I wonder if this is even a bug in wine at all. Age2 supports 3 resolutions, but the main menu is hardcoded to run at 800x600 or even 640x480 (not sure right now) and there is no way to change that (at least none that I know of). If the graphics driver does not offer this resolution with your setup, there is of course nothing wine can do about that. I don't know if there are any native linux games this stubborn/unflexible about the resolution, but if there is one, this would also fail, I think. Not sure about Age 3, though... Since that is newer, you should be able to at least configure the game to run at the same resolution as your display and it should work. Can you check that? I don't think this is a wine bug.
to be honest it really is, however i confused the shit out of myself and probably others from what i wrote here. i would suggest deleting this bug and i will figure out exactly what is going on and create a new bug report. i insist that what was happening did not hapen on windows. hence yes it IS a wine bug :) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23468 --- Comment #19 from Julian Rüger <jr98(a)gmx.net> 2011-12-14 09:51:42 CST --- No, sir... I'm sorry if this is a bit OT/discussion that does not belong in bugzilla, but: If, say, the nvidia-driver and X somehow do not provide the needed functionality, there is nothing wine can do about that. (See the xinput2-story) It could also be a bug in the driver. In those cases, we can only wait till the problems beyond our control are solved, or provide a workaround/hack in the meantime. And this workaround is the virtual-desktop window ;) So, I suggest we resolve this bug as invalid, and you open a new bug if you figure out the exact problem, like you said.
