HOwever when I try to run it under wine (on Ubuntu 9.10) it crashes. Okay, but that doesn't answer the question of whether you have actually installed the program into Wine, if the program requires such a procedure. If the application you are talking about is the 4DGL Workshop Beta from http://www.4dsystems.com.au/developers/4dgl-download.php then I can't reproduce a crash in wine-1.1.37-362-g9ce56b2 after installing it.
