[Bug 15137] New: Wine crashes when trying to play FEAR (MP3 issue)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15137 Summary: Wine crashes when trying to play FEAR (MP3 issue) Product: Wine Version: 1.1.4 Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: http://i.download.idg.pl/fannef/c8d1cb3bb6a163870f7e0273 7774f6e8/48c1a003/cyberjoy/dema/f/fear/fearxp2_spdemo_en .exe OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: tsalacinski(a)gmail.com Created an attachment (id=15846) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15846) FEAR output When I was trying to launch FEAR: Perseus Mandate demo, everything went ok, until I've reached the game itself. First of all - game wasn't starting at all, complaining about glsl bugs (it was just crashing). I've enabled the DX8 Shader option - forces to use DirectX 8 shaders. Problem went away. Game loads, can see the graphics without any single glitch, but when you stand up, the game crashes. I can't reproduce problem with glsl, because even when I've enabled DX9 shaders, it still runs. The output seems to be related to mp3 decoding (wine/dlls/winemp3.acm/layer3.c). It's VERY strange, because it contains non-ascii characters. The output looks like this on terminal and when I pipe it to the file. I've grepped out the lines containing "glsl" keyword (because the output was ~2mb and it contained only GL_INVALID_OPERATION statements). Disabling PulseAudio didn't help. The game seems to be crashing wine, I've had "Segmentation fault" error once. Same thing with original game. There were crashes before but after overriding some mp3 files everything was fully playable. But with all wine versions after 1.0 or 1.1.0 FEAR is crashing during playing intro to the new game. The only way to avoid this is to disable sound in game configuration -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

But it still crashes when sound starts playing (not the speech, but when the character gets up). joaopa: are you playing FEAR Perseus Mandate? I don't think it happens in FEAR at all. Only in this demo in URL (Perseus Mandate). Basically, when some kind of computer sound (sound effect from game) is starting to play when character gets up, the game crashes. Crashes hard - garbage in the terminal, not worth posting here. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Got crashes with both PM demo and original FEAR Still people saying that game works great I'm using 64bit gentoo linux(2.6.27.3) and OSSv4.1 as a sound driver. Tomasz, what's your system? http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15137 --- Comment #10 from Tomasz Sałaciński <tsalacinski(a)gmail.com> 2008-10-25 07:28:33 --- Taras: My system is Intel Core2Duo 2.53ghz, GeForce 8600GT, 2GB of RAM, Sound Blaster Live! card. Tried on Fedora 9 and Fedora 10 BETA, Fedora 9 was 32-bit, then reinstalled to 64-bit, and then I'm back on Fedora 10 32-bit (tried both archs). The bug is hard to find, because it's WINE that is crashing, not the game. I am compiling GIT right now and then I'll post if it works or not. Can it be related to operating system or SB Live drivers? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15137 --- Comment #12 from Tomasz Sałaciński <tsalacinski(a)gmail.com> 2008-11-22 17:19:01 --- @Tobias No, as I said the game loads when DX8 is enabled. The problem is, that while in game, after few seconds it crashes (every time exactly after playing one sound - HUD beep). I can see the environment rendered properly, I can hear the into speech, but every time the HUD activates its sound the game crashes with the output I've provided. Haven't tested with newest Wine though (last version I've tested was 1.1.8). If this problem isn't wine related, then it has to be hardware-related, since I've changed my system from Fedora to Ubuntu and the same problem still exists (ALSA sound driver with SB Live card). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15137 --- Comment #13 from Tobias Jakobi <liquid.acid(a)gmx.net> 2008-11-23 18:46:51 --- Yeah, I see. Sry for the noise. In any case, what version of mpg123 is installed on your system? I dunno if wine uses some internal version of mpg123 but if it's using an external one, the version might be an issue. I have mpg123-1.3.1 installed on my system and FEAR works fine, except for the isual graphical issues of course. At least I can't get it to crash by using sound. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15137 --- Comment #14 from Tomasz Sałaciński <tsalacinski(a)gmail.com> 2008-11-24 02:24:40 --- @Tobias I think it is using its own mp3 decoding functions (layer3.c file). I don't even have mpeg123 installed on my system (in Synaptic this package shows as uninstalled). I will download the demo from a different server though, maybe it's related to this polish mirror (I am getting 3 megabytes per second of download here, that's why I am using it)? Maybe the file is corrupted? I'll try to download it from eg. Fileshack and then post a reply. Anyway, I think WINE shouldn't crash like this even if the file is corrupted (if it is). I'll also try to reproduce the problem with a different sound card (I have an Intel HDA 8.1 card on my motherboard - it's disabled right now, and old SB Live! that works for me for a long time and never failed. I'll try to remove SB Live and try with Intel). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Player 1024, through ALSA). kernel is gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r2, using the in-kernel ALSA driver. I never tested the FEAR demo with wine though, I only have the Platinum collection here, which includes the main game plus all the add-ons. However I have only installed the main game currently. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
