If you set the windows version to win95 or win98 then on launch the game will complain about missing dispdib.dll with error 2 (if you use a native windows version of the dll is complains about dispdib.dll with error 33). You can click ok and ignore the warning about dispdib.dll and enable the sound effects, but when the first sound effect tries to play it will stutter then lock up the game. If you're on a 64-bit OS, be careful, as the outer demo installer is an ms-dos self extracting archive. I can't test if it works on the latest git as it now freezes when loading the game on 1.3.36 or the latest git if the windows version is set to 95 or 98. And if it's not set to either of those then you can't enable sound effects.

Wine has some reports about crackling sound, e.g. bug #28856, but they are all related to PulseAudio. What rose my interest is that this app contains a wail32.dll of dubious fame for being associated with SuspendThread in bug #3930, comment #7.
