With current git, I'm where Rob was in comment #19, i.e.
crash on unimplemented atl.dll.AtlIPersistStreamInit_Load

I'd turn A.F.'s hints into patches myself, but I need to spare my hands.
I can test somebody else's patches, though.

This bug is turning into quite the patchfest!
