I can confirm that the latest patch (1.23.0.6352) crashes Warcraft 3 right
after loging in into battle.net.
This crash didn't happen two days ago when there was still the old patch

Even though I don't think that this will help I give you the error message that
pops up right after the games crashes:

This comment seems to be linked both to the ads and to something else. Whenever
I log into Battle.Net, I don't see any ads, it's just the battle.net header.
However, when entering a regular game, at the moment that a matchup seems to
have been found, the game will crash with this error:

This application has encountered a critical error:

FATAL ERROR!
Program:        C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\war3.exe
Exception:      0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0023:7D215BB4

The instruction at '0x7D215BB4' referenced memory at '0x2AE26EC'.
The memory could not be 'read'.

Press OK to terminate the application.

Not sure if that helps, but just anything I can do to help.

I can log in in battle.net fine (no ads) but if I don't start a custom game
fast enough (meaning a minute or so) the game crashes. However once a custom
game is started I have no trouble playing (Until the game ends and Bnet
crashes.) I haven't been able to play a ladder game yet. Will attach some
errors later today.

I can confirm this bug.

Warcraft crashes as soon as I have entered the password for me. No chance to
join a game. There is not an obvious error message in the terminal, just the
window that Baum ranger attached in #1.

I am using wine-1.1.17 compiled with gcc-4.3.3.
My graphics card is a nvidia 8800gts (nvidia-drivers-180.37) under an 2.6.28
kernel.

I can confirm it too. I also noticed that Wacraft III 1.23 does not crash
instantly if you use wine-1.1.9 (with no IO completion port patch). Instead
random crashes happen while you are in a chat room(about 1 crash per minute).
The random crashes do not happen while you are in a game.

Using wine 1.1.15 with event.c hack and AcceptEx implementation. I can login in
battle.net start a custom game, finish a custom game and then the game crashes.
The game also crashes if I idle in chat for a minute or so. Here's the output
in the console. This is a log submited from 1 minute or so idling in chat
crash.

I got same problem after latest patch. Warcraft crashes as soon as I enter
bnet.

wine-1.1.11 compiled with gcc-4.3.3

this bug is certainly caused by the new Warcraft III, not a new wine.  I have
wine 1.1.17 and never saw this crash until now when the new warcraft patch came
out.  I also have a patched version of wine 1.1.12 (patched for acceptx) and
the crash happens there too.  For me, it happens after a game on battlenet
(either arranged team or normal game).  As others mentioned, if you join
another game before the crash, everything is fine.  So it is something that
happens while you are on battlenet but NOT in a game.  By the way, I also have
a windows box and in the latest warcraft there don't seem to be ads there
either, just the battle.net banner where there *could* be ads.  So the problem
may not be directly related to that since thats what happens even in regular
windows.  But maybe between games it tries to reload or refresh that banner,
and thats when it crashes.  Seems to be between 30 and 90 seconds after the 1st
game that it crashes.

Fresh wine install version 1.1.17 (from git - no additonal patches applied)
compiled with gcc 4.3.2
Fresh install of Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne

Game installs and launches normally. When connecting to battle.net, the new
patch for the game (1.23) is automatically downloaded and applied.

After restarting game, it still launches normally and single player and LAN
play work fine. Connecting to Battle.net works, but after approximately one
minute the game crashes with the error message attached to this bug.

If a battle.net game is initiated before the crash occurs, it plays out
normally with no problem.

The crash seems to be related to the "new banner ad system" included in the new
1.23 warcraft patch. Normally, after logging into battle.net, the top of the
screen starts out with just a title banner saying "Battle.net", but eventually
changes to various advertisements. Since applying the new patch, I have yet to
see an ad appear. I believe therein lies the problem, after the title banner
has been displayed for a minute or so, it seems like the first ad is trying to
display and instead the game crashes.

I'm getting  exactly the same thing, and i feared that it would happen before i
even got on after i realized that a patch download was going on.... cause this
seems to be recurrent w/ patches XD.  Anyways i can log on to B-net and I'm
fine as long as i choose a game quickly (custom games), but just now its
started to freeze when the game actually starts.  Finishing a game usually
doesnt crash me though.  Using 1.1.17

I too tried to block it (by port) and it still crashes. 

I don't think it's the banner so much as the new code. This issue is occurring
on Windows machines too:

There are two behaviors observable:
a.) Game crashes instantly after login
b.) Game crashes if you are about for 1 min in a chat room.

You get behavior b instead of a, if schannel support is on.

For schannel support a recent version of libgnutls-dev is required.
If you see the following line while running "./configure" then you get behavior
a:
configure: libgnutls development files not found, no schannel support.
If you see something like this, then you get behavior b:
checking for -lgnutls... libgnutls.so.13

Until revision 3c114a88ca1752ac07fe039d0471f89384ea4704 (inclusive) you can use
the libgnutls-dev version of Ubuntu hardy (2.0.4-1ubuntu2.3).

If you want schannel support with a more recent version of wine then you need a
more recent version of libgnutls-dev too: e.g. the version 2.4.1-1ubuntu0.2 of
Ubuntu Intrepid.

Summary: If you use wine-1.1.12 or later make sure that you update your
libgnutls-dev to version 2.4.1-1ubuntu0.2 or later to get behavior b.

As a side note:
You get a compilation error, if you try to build with an old libgnutls-dev
version a wine revision between 3c114a88ca1752ac07fe039d0471f89384ea4704 and 
8c4a2978b281e9519a6581d859add636de4b42d4.

Using an native secur32.dll causes the instant crash. Using buildin Version
works with 1.1.16 for a short time.
I have tried 3 native secur32.dlls from 3 XP-Versions. None worked (but it
works on those XP-Versions).

Patch to prevent crash when the handle is invalid.

This patch address the crash type b. It does not fix the actual problem, but
convert the crash into an error message.

patch -p1 < patch.diff

I copy/paste the patch content into the patch.diff file
its probaly a mistake this is the first time i try to apply a patch
:-s

I setup a wine repository with useful Warcraft 3 patches here:
http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/warcraft3.git

Besides my patch it also contains a patch which works around bug 9787.

The url to clone/fetch from is:
git://repo.or.cz/wine/warcraft3.git

e.g. to build WINE with the patches and run warcraft 3 you could enter the
following commands:
cd
git clone git://repo.or.cz/wine/warcraft3.git wine-war3
cd wine-war3
./configure --with-gnutls && make depend && make
./wine "c:\Program Files\Warcraft III\Frozen Throne.exe"

Much faster, but also more difficult is the fetching of the changes into your
checked out wine repository.
git remote add warcraft3 git://repo.or.cz/wine/warcraft3.git
git fetch warcraft3

And if you know what you do then you can reset the current branch to it with:
git reset --hard warcraft3/master

After this patch the game doesn't crash in chat (only sometimes there's a
"Connection to battle.net lost" but no crash)
However when you start a ladder game there's a crash while loading the game -
the crash is the same Acces Violation.
Custom games still work fine, though...

I had these issues with W3FT 1.23 too. So I downgraded to wine 1.1.4 and so far
everything looks stable. No crashes.

I down graded to 1.1.4 after having the type B crashes and it did stop
crashing. Though arranged games still dont work, once you find a game it brings
up an error message (but battle net doesn't crash... which is nice).

Installed 1.1.4 .deb for Hardy in Jaunty beta and still getting the same crash.

How can I get the 1.1.4 source from the git repo to compile this myself ? 
There is no 1.1.4 .deb available for Intrepid of Jaunty.

Compiled 1.1.4 here and bnet problem disappears. But still have the crashes
while saving in single player.

How can I get the 1.1.4 source from the git repo to compile this myself ? 
There is no 1.1.4 .deb available for Intrepid of Jaunty.

Compiled 1.1.4 here and bnet problem disappears. But still have the crashes
while saving in single player.

Downgraded to 1.1.4 and it seams to work fine.
Posted patch didn't do squat for me ( on 1.1.18 ), but can't guarantee it was
correctly applied (just did a really quick ebuild (added: epatch
{$FILESDIR}/1.1.18-wc3-invalid-handle.patch), and I'm not really experienced
with patching ;) )

After this patch the game doesn't crash in chat (only sometimes there's a
"Connection to battle.net lost" but no crash)
However when you start a ladder game there's a crash while loading the game -
the crash is the same Acces Violation.
Custom games still work fine, though...

I had these issues with W3FT 1.23 too. So I downgraded to wine 1.1.4 and so far
everything looks stable. No crashes.

I down graded to 1.1.4 after having the type B crashes and it did stop
crashing. Though arranged games still dont work, once you find a game it brings
up an error message (but battle net doesn't crash... which is nice).

How can I get the 1.1.4 source from the git repo to compile this myself ?

care too), but the crash does not happen.

So to you dev types: what is a good next step toward this getting resolved in
future versions? Should I do a regression test?

Are you all sure the battle net problem is gone with 1.1.4 ?
The crash is still there between the 20th en the 30th minute of a custom game
(3 out of 3 tries) for me.

Using Ubuntu Jaunty with wine 1.1.4 (.deb for Hardy :s)

On 1.1.18, the crash for me would happen very quickly, usually within about a
minute or so of being in chat.
On 1.1.4, I was able to chat for quite awhile but did not time how long.
You bring up a good point - maybe the issue is just improved and not completely
gone - so I'll spend some more time and actually clock how long I can stay in
chat, run a few long games, etc. to confirm whether or not it is completely
gone.
I'll report back here when done.

Also, I haven't personally verified that 1.1.4 is the latest version where the
problem has (or at least seems to have) gone away. Not sure how the first
person figured out that 1.1.4 was the magic version. Has anyone confirmed if it
still happens almost immediately in 1.1.5 yet? If I cannot make 1.1.4 fail,
I'll start going up the chain and see what the first verison that does fail is.

Downgraded to 1.1.4 and it seams to work fine.
Posted patch didn't do squat for me ( on 1.1.18 ), but can't guarantee it was
correctly applied (just did a really quick ebuild (added: epatch
{$FILESDIR}/1.1.18-wc3-invalid-handle.patch), and I'm not really experienced
with patching ;) )

Well I'll be darned. I too tried compiling a fresh 1.1.4 version, and the
battle.net problem is not present. I don't see the banner ads at all (and don't
care too), but the crash does not happen.

So to you dev types: what is a good next step toward this getting resolved in
future versions? Should I do a regression test?

Are you all sure the battle net problem is gone with 1.1.4 ?
The crash is still there between the 20th en the 30th minute of a custom game
(3 out of 3 tries) for me.

Using Ubuntu Jaunty with wine 1.1.4 (.deb for Hardy :s)

On 1.1.18, the crash for me would happen very quickly, usually within about a
minute or so of being in chat.
On 1.1.4, I was able to chat for quite awhile but did not time how long.
You bring up a good point - maybe the issue is just improved and not completely
gone - so I'll spend some more time and actually clock how long I can stay in
chat, run a few long games, etc. to confirm whether or not it is completely
gone.
I'll report back here when done.

Also, I haven't personally verified that 1.1.4 is the latest version where the
problem has (or at least seems to have) gone away. Not sure how the first
person figured out that 1.1.4 was the magic version. Has anyone confirmed if it
still happens almost immediately in 1.1.5 yet? If I cannot make 1.1.4 fail,
I'll start going up the chain and see what the first verison that does fail is.

secur32: Disable schannel InitializeSecurityContextW.

The implementation of schannel is incomplete. This patch makes
InitializeSecurityContextW a stub again, to prevent Warcraft 3 from crashing
when the user is one minute in a battle.net chat room.

I updated the git repository (website: http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/warcraft3.git)
with the warcraft 3 patches.

If you have checked it out you can update to the newest patches by executing
the following commands in the checkout out directory:
git fetch -f
git rebase origin
make

If you haven't checked it out so far then following my instructions from
comment #27 is enough.

After this patch the game doesn't crash in chat (only sometimes there's a
"Connection to battle.net lost" but no crash)
However when you start a ladder game there's a crash while loading the game -
the crash is the same Acces Violation.
Custom games still work fine, though...

I had these issues with W3FT 1.23 too. So I downgraded to wine 1.1.4 and so far
everything looks stable. No crashes.

I down graded to 1.1.4 after having the type B crashes and it did stop
crashing. Though arranged games still dont work, once you find a game it brings
up an error message (but battle net doesn't crash... which is nice).

How can I get the 1.1.4 source from the git repo to compile this myself ? 
There is no 1.1.4 .deb available for Intrepid of Jaunty.

trace+secur32 until crash with slightly modified wine-1.1.19

The attached trace shows that DeleteSecurityContext gets called twice with the
same handle. The trace does not contain the crash stackstrace as Warcraft 3
catch the exception and writes down it's own stacktrace file.

The trace has been made with a wine build based on commit 1f00a870ec6ee of my
repository:

secur32: Disable schannel InitializeSecurityContextW.

The implementation of schannel is incomplete. This patch makes
InitializeSecurityContextW a stub again, to prevent Warcraft 3 from crashing
when the user is one minute in a battle.net chat room.

I updated the git repository (website: http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/warcraft3.git)
with the warcraft 3 patches.

If you have checked it out you can update to the newest patches by executing
the following commands in the checkout out directory:
git fetch -f
git rebase origin
make

If you haven't checked it out so far then following my instructions from
comment #27 is enough.

trace+secur32 until crash with slightly modified wine-1.1.19

The attached trace shows that DeleteSecurityContext gets called twice with the
same handle. The trace does not contain the crash stackstrace as Warcraft 3
catch the exception and writes down it's own stacktrace file.

The trace has been made with a wine build based on commit 1f00a870ec6ee of my
repository:

0xc11c in hex and has the following meaning:

After this patch the game doesn't crash in chat (only sometimes there's a
"Connection to battle.net lost" but no crash)
However when you start a ladder game there's a crash while loading the game -
the crash is the same Acces Violation.
Custom games still work fine, though...

I had these issues with W3FT 1.23 too. So I downgraded to wine 1.1.4 and so far
everything looks stable. No crashes.

I down graded to 1.1.4 after having the type B crashes and it did stop
crashing. Though arranged games still dont work, once you find a game it brings
up an error message (but battle net doesn't crash... which is nice).

Installed 1.1.4 .deb for Hardy in Jaunty beta and still getting the same crash.

How can I get the 1.1.4 source from the git repo to compile this myself ? 
There is no 1.1.4 .deb available for Intrepid of Jaunty.

Compiled 1.1.4 here and bnet problem disappears. But still have the crashes

Downgraded to 1.1.4 and it seams to work fine.
Posted patch didn't do squat for me ( on 1.1.18 ), but can't guarantee it was
correctly applied (just did a really quick ebuild (added: epatch
{$FILESDIR}/1.1.18-wc3-invalid-handle.patch), and I'm not really experienced
with patching ;) )

Well I'll be darned. I too tried compiling a fresh 1.1.4 version, and the
battle.net problem is not present. I don't see the banner ads at all (and don't
care too), but the crash does not happen.

So to you dev types: what is a good next step toward this getting resolved in
future versions? Should I do a regression test?

Are you all sure the battle net problem is gone with 1.1.4 ?
The crash is still there between the 20th en the 30th minute of a custom game
(3 out of 3 tries) for me.

Using Ubuntu Jaunty with wine 1.1.4 (.deb for Hardy :s)

On 1.1.18, the crash for me would happen very quickly, usually within about a
minute or so of being in chat.
On 1.1.4, I was able to chat for quite awhile but did not time how long.
You bring up a good point - maybe the issue is just improved and not completely
gone - so I'll spend some more time and actually clock how long I can stay in
chat, run a few long games, etc. to confirm whether or not it is completely
gone.
I'll report back here when done.

Also, I haven't personally verified that 1.1.4 is the latest version where the
problem has (or at least seems to have) gone away. Not sure how the first
person figured out that 1.1.4 was the magic version. Has anyone confirmed if it
still happens almost immediately in 1.1.5 yet? If I cannot make 1.1.4 fail,
I'll start going up the chain and see what the first verison that does fail is.

Crash after entering user/password. 

i cant see battle net,

Downgraded to 1.1.4 and it seams to work fine.
Posted patch didn't do squat for me ( on 1.1.18 ), but can't guarantee it was
correctly applied (just did a really quick ebuild (added: epatch
{$FILESDIR}/1.1.18-wc3-invalid-handle.patch), and I'm not really experienced
with patching ;) )

Well I'll be darned. I too tried compiling a fresh 1.1.4 version, and the
battle.net problem is not present. I don't see the banner ads at all (and don't
care too), but the crash does not happen.

So to you dev types: what is a good next step toward this getting resolved in
future versions? Should I do a regression test?

Are you all sure the battle net problem is gone with 1.1.4 ?
The crash is still there between the 20th en the 30th minute of a custom game
(3 out of 3 tries) for me.

Using Ubuntu Jaunty with wine 1.1.4 (.deb for Hardy :s)

On 1.1.18, the crash for me would happen very quickly, usually within about a
minute or so of being in chat.
On 1.1.4, I was able to chat for quite awhile but did not time how long.
You bring up a good point - maybe the issue is just improved and not completely
gone - so I'll spend some more time and actually clock how long I can stay in
chat, run a few long games, etc. to confirm whether or not it is completely
gone.
I'll report back here when done.

Also, I haven't personally verified that 1.1.4 is the latest version where the
problem has (or at least seems to have) gone away. Not sure how the first
person figured out that 1.1.4 was the magic version. Has anyone confirmed if it
still happens almost immediately in 1.1.5 yet? If I cannot make 1.1.4 fail,
I'll start going up the chain and see what the first verison that does fail is.

secur32: Disable schannel InitializeSecurityContextW.

The implementation of schannel is incomplete. This patch makes
InitializeSecurityContextW a stub again, to prevent Warcraft 3 from crashing
when the user is one minute in a battle.net chat room.

I updated the git repository (website: http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/warcraft3.git)
with the warcraft 3 patches.

If you have checked it out you can update to the newest patches by executing
the following commands in the checkout out directory:
git fetch -f
git rebase origin
make

If you haven't checked it out so far then following my instructions from
comment #27 is enough.

The attached trace shows that DeleteSecurityContext gets called twice with the
same handle. The trace does not contain the crash stackstrace as Warcraft 3
catch the exception and writes down it's own stacktrace file.

After this patch the game doesn't crash in chat (only sometimes there's a
"Connection to battle.net lost" but no crash)
However when you start a ladder game there's a crash while loading the game -
the crash is the same Acces Violation.
Custom games still work fine, though...

I had these issues with W3FT 1.23 too. So I downgraded to wine 1.1.4 and so far
everything looks stable. No crashes.

I down graded to 1.1.4 after having the type B crashes and it did stop
crashing. Though arranged games still dont work, once you find a game it brings
up an error message (but battle net doesn't crash... which is nice).

Installed 1.1.4 .deb for Hardy in Jaunty beta and still getting the same crash.

How can I get the 1.1.4 source from the git repo to compile this myself ? 
There is no 1.1.4 .deb available for Intrepid of Jaunty.

secur32: Disable schannel InitializeSecurityContextW.

The implementation of schannel is incomplete. This patch makes
InitializeSecurityContextW a stub again, to prevent Warcraft 3 from crashing
when the user is one minute in a battle.net chat room.

I updated the git repository (website: http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/warcraft3.git)
with the warcraft 3 patches.

If you have checked it out you can update to the newest patches by executing
the following commands in the checkout out directory:
git fetch -f
git rebase origin
make

If you haven't checked it out so far then following my instructions from
comment #27 is enough.

trace+secur32 until crash with slightly modified wine-1.1.19

The attached trace shows that DeleteSecurityContext gets called twice with the
same handle. The trace does not contain the crash stackstrace as Warcraft 3
catch the exception and writes down it's own stacktrace file.

The trace has been made with a wine build based on commit 1f00a870ec6ee of my
repository:

The trace contains some "magical numbers", here are the symbols:

The argument fContextReq=49436 of the InitializeSecurityContextW calls is
0xc11c in hex and has the following meaning:

i tried to get the repository using the commands u outlined but i get an X
error during the compilation saying that i need X support but dont have the
libraries for Xlib or Xfree86. any help?

I have got same problem. I get this on 4 machines... One is english W3 and
others are czech. I tried with these versions:

wine-1.1.23 - crash after entering password and trying to login
wine-1.0.1 (stable) - WORKS but i cannot host because there is no acceptex or
disable IO completion patch for stable wine :-(
wine-hacks-1.1.21 (http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/hacks.git) - crash after entering
password and trying to login
wine-hacks-1.1.23 (newest from http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/hacks.git) - crash
after entering password and trying to login

All in openSUSE 11.1 and Factory.
Are you sure the bug is in secur32? Imho it crashes because of that new banner
system introduced in 1.23 patch (with which this problem started).
Additionally many users using Windows XP/98/Vista are having the same issue as
we do. But blizzard tech support completely ignores them (They are so funny :-)
) as you can see here:

Unlike with AcceptEx, here there is no solution to the bug - the game crashes
due to not fully implemented function. The patch that is applied undoes the
partial implementation and stubs the function and that is why it won't be
accepted.

I've found the problem. It is not a wine bug, it occures since fglrx version
8.602 (Catalyst 9.4). 
I installed 8.593 (Catalyst 9.3) and I could play perfectly for two hours.

I have feeling that all users having this bug have either Czech warcraft OR are
from Czech Republic...
All my friends running warcraft 3 on wine are suffering this problem - NONE of
them can connect to battle.net because of this.
None of patches here has solved the issue :-( .
What debug streams are needed to debug this please? secur32? relay? or trace?

Well, I solved this problem using the patch mentioned in this bugreport.

So to get Warcraft III working, I've done this:

Latest git + AcceptEx-Patch (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20300) +
schannel-Patch (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20360).
Then run in git-directory:

tools/make_requests
./configure --with-gnutls
make depend
make

make_requests is needed for the AcceptEx-Patch and "--with-gnutls" was
mentioned here.
Also be sure to run Warcraft with "./wine ...", not "wine ...".

I have the german version and a friend of mine has the version from UK. We all
have this bug.

If I remember correctly there was a dll which you aren't allowed to override,
or must override (I'm unsure) so you can join Bnet and only got kicked after a
few minutes.
If you have dll overrides - remove them and try it again (clean install: rm
~/.wine).

I can't tell you about the other solutions here, since I didn't tested those.

Problem was that i didn't have libgnutls26 package installed.
So openSUSE users, check if you have libgnutls26 installed (or
libgnutls26-32bit in case you are running x86-64 arch)
With libgnutls26 installed, i dont get crash even without patch!
I will fix the missing dependencies in openSUSE's packages and we can close
this what do you think?

Hi, I am running opensuse 11.1 64-bit. I had libgnutls26 but not
libgnutls26-32bit. I installed it and I confirm the above works!

I don't get the instant_crash_when_you_logon_to_bnet. Also, i stayed in a
channel for a while and there doesn't seem that the other type of crash appears
either.

Hi, I am running opensuse 11.1 64-bit. I had libgnutls26 but not
libgnutls26-32bit. I installed it and I confirm the above works!

I don't get the instant_crash_when_you_logon_to_bnet. Also, i stayed in a
channel for a while and there doesn't seem that the other type of crash appears
either.

Does anyone know how to get it fixed in Ubuntu 9.04 x64? I have libgnutls26 and
the Ubuntu repos don't have a package called libgnutls26-32bit.

For Gentoo, I wrote a multilib (x32/x64) gcrypt ebuild and a multilib gnutls
ebuild, and when using those in an overlay i can enable gnutls in wine just
fine

My multilib ebuilds (hacky):
libgcrypt multilib http://pastebin.com/f2a9f7f93
gnutls multilib http://pastebin.com/f3b286c5b

Then you need to unmask the gnutls use flag (package.use.mask) for wine and
rebuild it.

 - but that's not likely something the upstream is likely to go for. Gentoo
still lacks 'proper' multilib support, so unless a dev decides to create a
gnutls32 emul package, this will remain a hack. You could also create a 32-bit
chroot, or just maintain a local gnutls32 compile and a local wine compile.

I mentioned on my previous post that you don't crash in channel,  however i was
wrong. I get frequent crashes when staying in channel and chatting. Well, at
least now you can log on to b.net, though you must quickly find a game to join!

This bug report was originally only about the crash at login time. 
I filled in bug 18997 about the crash which happens if you stay one minute in
the chat channel.

I updated the HOWTO of the application entry: It explains now how to work
around the Battle.net bugs.

For those of you still experiencing problems, try replacing your wine
installation's windows or system32 directory. I was wondering why this problem
was still occurring for me despite the fact that I use a patched version of
Wine (available to all Ubuntu users, look for pxc's PPA). I eventually tried
moving ~/.wine to ~/.wine.bad, and that solved the problem. I then tried moving
~/.wine.bad/drive_c/windows to ~/.wine.bad/drive_c/winbad, and copying over the
new windows directory to ~/.wine.bad. Finally, I deleted ~/.wine and restored
~/.wine.bad to ~/.wine. Voila!
