I don't know enough about this function to know if this kernel commit directly breaks the wine code, or some other fault in wine code is indirectly triggering the problem. According to the commit, which I attached, this "corrected" behavior in PTRACE_POKUSER hardware breakpoint functions. I have no idea what this function is or what the "correct" behavior is supposed to be, so I would not even know what to ask on the kernel mailing list, all I can say is the change causes a program to bomb on wine which used to work. It needs to be addressed by an expert, i.e. a wine dev who used these commands and understands that this kernel patch is either broke, or the wine code is relying on unspecified behavior and needs to be updated. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. To clarify further : There is some non-zero chance that the crash is actually the "correct" behavior due to other unrelated bugs, and in the previous version of the kernel (4.18 and below), the crash was not correctly trapped by the kernel logic/userspace interaction. This application only partially functions... it runs for about 35 minutes in game mode (solo zombies) and then freezes, sometimes with an "unhandled exception caught" message, but often just a freeze of one of the game threads while other threads continue running. After the kernel commit in 4.19, it doesn't even start, just immediately states "unhandled exception caught". There is also the chance that the kernel commit is just wrong... i.e. it changes semantics of the PTRACE_POKUSER in a way that is now incorrect. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. OK, I've added this bug to the addpdb page for this game. There is another bug report #41267. But, it never broaches the possibility that it was kernel related.

Thanks. The game still has a further bug in that it will only run for about 35 minutes (flawlessly though, both with and without DXVK) on the Nuketown map before it will just lock up, I suspect some issue with thread safe behavior but that bug is going to be very hard to track down, I don't even have an idea how to approach it at this point. If anyone reading this thread wants to take a look at the 35 minute lock up on the Black Ops 2 Nuketown map, heads up this is a "pro" map. Best strategy for casual player is to just ring-around-the rosie the zombies in round 1, after 35 min the game should freeze up. I am at wits end with this problem... can't seem to make anything impact it, native dlls, different computer, dxvk vs not etc. all the same. It can run on Linux 4.19 if you apply my hand reverted patch. I installed steam with winetricks, it applies a dll override to disable overlay renderer. I use no other dll overrides unless dxvk is installed and then just dxvk overrides. I am running a nvidia card. It must have something to do with AMD vs Nvidia card then. Game plays fine for me except for the lockup after 35 minutes on Nuketown (same thing on very latest wine-4.0 stable) both with and without DXVK (though stuttery without DXVK). I am running a 10 series nvidia (gtx 1070) use vulkan beta driver 396.54.09. Vulkan shouldn't make a difference if not using DXVK. It seems the time related crash may be due to an eventual internal memory overrun, I think the game manages its own internal heap but must do mem ops through core wine so I think in multithreaded mode something relating to memory management is not thread safe and the heap is eventually overflowing. This game is definately multi threaded due to the way it crashes (player can still move around map on one thread after it locks up) so that is the only hint I have, something with threading over threaded abi is not thread safe, most likely going to be really hard to track down. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. The fact that wine used to work on some programs and doesn't work any more with new PTRACE_POKEUSER behavior is not going to matter to them unless it can be shown the change (claimed as a fix) is actually incorrect. I stated this because there is some (probably small) chance that the affected programs (BO2 and others Anthony found) should be crashing due to issues unrelated to this change, and the kernel change now "correctly" traps the error. I can't get the program to run under valgrind, winedbg, or winedbg with gdb. It may be detecting the debugger hooks and failing intentionally in unrelated code as a crack defense (COD WaW will also messagebox with a debugger detected message and halt). One solution I thought of may be a programmed breakpoint in MessageBoxA and manual backtrace (i.e. modify messagebox wine code with a break at the entry to messageboxa then call a manual backtrace). That would at least give a backtrace of the crash which happens when the kernel has the new ptrace code, but still may not point to the actual problem (most likely ptrace.c needs to be updated to handle the new interface). A more experienced wine debugger may know a way to circumvent the crashes when debugger is activated, i.e. attach to the program after it messageboxes with the unhandled exception caught and get the backtrace, but still may not point directly to the ptrace issue. It seems to me that a better way to approach this may be to understand the implicationss of the new PTRACE_POKEUSER behavior on the wine ptrace code and conclude from that why it doesn't work like it used to, not try to back-trace the actual crash in any given program. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. I tried intercepting the peek and poke calls in ptrace.c but it seems the program never gets there ... either pilot error on my part (someone should independently check), or some other library got affected by the kernel change (maybe even the Nvidia binary blob... but it works fine with other wine programs besides BO2 on 4.19 with the new breakpoint behavior). Instead of trying to pinpoint all wineserver ptrace calls I modified the kernel hw_breakpoints.c function to add some diagnostics to the output to capture what is going on. Actually take that back.. I bisected from a git clone of Linus' kernel tree on github which didn't even have the 4.18.19 version... Linus' tree doesn't seem to incorporate the patch updates after a version release. The bisect was done between release 4.18 stable and release 4.19 stable. The first klog in the old kernel code showed breakpoint disabled and skipped during this call. However the new kernel code will always set the breakpoint. The problem might be that poking 0x11110055 to dr7 before the breakpoing address registers are even set is enabling breakpoints with either uninitialized or unwanted tracepoints. To test this out I updated server/ptrace.c to zero out the breakpoint addressess (0 should never be hit) before poking the 0x11110055. . . . ptrace( PTRACE_POKEUSER, pid, DR_OFFSET(0), 0x00000000 ); ptrace( PTRACE_POKEUSER, pid, DR_OFFSET(1), 0x00000000 ); ptrace( PTRACE_POKEUSER, pid, DR_OFFSET(2), 0x00000000 ); ptrace( PTRACE_POKEUSER, pid, DR_OFFSET(3), 0x00000000 ); ptrace( PTRACE_POKEUSER, pid, DR_OFFSET(6), 0x00000000 ); ptrace( PTRACE_POKEUSER, pid, DR_OFFSET(7), 0x11110055 ); switch (context->cpu) . . . and voila now BO2 starts with the new kernel breakpoint behavior introduced in Linux 4.19. Risen 2 still crash in wine 6.12.

Seems this is broken again.
With the patch applied to 6.20, the game does launch, but a few seconds into the music playing on the menu the same unhandled exception pops up.
Im not following wine development but gave 6.20 a try (with dxvk 1.9.2) and it still runs for me except for crackling audio. Most likely you are running out of 32 bit address space as wine 6 development series is bloating too much into 32 bit address space for some games to run. (the unhandled exception is a generic trap which in your case is now most likely trigger on an unhandled memory overlow) I run 6.1 with manually added spatial audio patches where 32 bit bloating is not bad enough to stop the 32b games I have from running (Waw is the most sensitive one I have to the bloating). -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. I can confirm that the patches 218416 and 218415 fix this issue for me. Black Ops 2 Zombies is starting fine now.

My ptrace patches are only needed if the ptrace poke to 0x11115555 is still in the code (this poke turned on interrupts for uninitialized trap addresses which caused the unhandled exception crash). If the 0x11115555 poke is removed (most likely removing workarounds and support for earlier linux versions) the trap addresses should not need to be iniitialized with 0s (an address which won't be hit) -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
