[Bug 16248] New: Dragon Naturally Speaking 7: Regression
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16248 Summary: Dragon Naturally Speaking 7: Regression Product: Wine Version: 1.1.9 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: mdirk(a)sympatico.ca Even though I had bought only "Dragon Naturally Speaking 7: Essentials", this version used to work fine under Wine 1.1.7 . Thus, I had assumed to expect the behavior to have been improved enough for the Essentials Edition to work from now on. But after upgrading Wine to version 1.1.9, a Regression took place. Still installed properly, and having a user profile for me, DNS 7 no longer works. The behavior is that after launching, the message appears "Initializing Dictation". But this message stays, which should get replaced by something else. For a fraction of a second, the toolbar menus become fully colored, which would indicate that the program is ready for use. But next, the toolbar becomes grayed again, and does not respond to input of any kind. The icon indicating whether the microphone is switched on or not, stays unfilled. And trying to position the mouse cursor over the toolbar, causes the Linux cursor to disappear, for which reason the menus can also not be clicked on. Keyboard shortcuts don't work. The system tray icon also stays unreachable by the mouse, only displaying a trivial balloon but no menu. The toolbar fails to reposition itself as it did before, onto any available window awaiting a dictation. And after about a minute, the application dies. Trying to re-establish an OSS sound driver audio profile succeeds with the message that "The sound quality is unacceptable." But then trying to establish an ALSA sound driver audio profile causes a crash before the new profile gets saved. In this mode, the main toolbar has already gone into its unresponsive mode, but control over the app's events is taken care of successfully by more normal-looking windows. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16248 --- Comment #2 from Dirk Mittler <mdirk(a)sympatico.ca> 2008-11-28 18:09:58 --- Also, I tried to run DNS 7 in a virtual desktop, hoping that this could be a GDI glitch thus solvable. But whether it's GDI+ -related or not, none of the behavior errors could not be corrected with a virtual desktop window. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

But since the microphone cannot even be switched 'on', no voice commands can be given either. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16248 --- Comment #5 from Dirk Mittler <mdirk(a)sympatico.ca> 2008-11-29 13:54:27 --- When I had first set up Dragon Naturally Speaking 7, I had used winetricks to install 'fakeie6'. And I found that DNS did not need the 'gdiplus' patch, in order to work fine. By that time, the Wine DLLs were good enough to let it run. But after my upgrade to Wine 1.1.9, since Dragon was no longer working, I did try to use winetricks, to install the native version of 'gdiplus' as well. Yet, this did not help. It seemed to have no effect on Dragon. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16248 --- Comment #7 from Dirk Mittler <mdirk(a)sympatico.ca> 2008-11-30 22:07:09 --- I've seriously considered it. But my real problem with this is two-fold: First, I'm not as much of a programmer as I once was, instead relying on my Linux box, and trying to save as much Windows software as I can, while following a real schedule of chores in my life. Secondly, because I'm trying to secure this much paid-for Windows software, my Linux computer has a multitude of fake C: drives, not one or three. The fact that I have so many 'WINEPREFIX'es myself, has never prevented me from configuring software for my easier style of use. But then all these different configurations would be affected, every time I bisect, and every time I recompile Wine. It's even quite a challenge for me, just to try compiling Wine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16248 Dirk Mittler <mdirk(a)sympatico.ca> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|UNCONFIRMED |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED --- Comment #9 from Dirk Mittler <mdirk(a)sympatico.ca> 2009-02-03 18:22:19 --- I have finally been able to find the error. What I had done wrong, was to change the GUI under an earlier Wine version, to one where the toolbar attaches itself to a working Wine application, into which Dragon can dictate. This GUI format is no longer supported even under Wine 1.1.14 (at present). Also, one needs for the GUI to work, to change this preference. DNS only likes to run in a mode, where the toolbar is fixed along the top of the desktop. The solution was to reinstall DNS, at which point this default layout is also chosen. But this was also a solution which I was avoiding, because this way I've lost my personal vocabulary database.
