The problem: the game's custom mouse pointer is invisible in the menus. Actually, the pointer is there somewhere because I can manoeuvre the mouse over the buttons and they become highlighted. So after all, I can start the game. Much to my relief the mouse pointer is showing up correctly in the main game (so only the menus are affected). No demo available. P.s: with the reverted commit in bug #26903 I was able to start the game in Wine-1.3.18. Unfortunately the mouse problem became more serious: the pointer isn't just invisible but I lost the ability to click on any buttons (mouse is completely unusable).
