Perhaps this might be related to the ptrace bug mentioned here:

   4. Do *NOT* use linux kernel 2.6.9 or 2.6.10 under x86 and 2.6.9-2.6.14 under
x86-64.

I also read there is an patch in the mm kernel-patchset to fix the ptrace bug
for x86-64 (that might get into .15). Perhaps you should try an fixed kernel.
