You might try disabling some environmental variables and see if that helps. Now have using ubuntu 13.04 with wine 1.5 and 1.6 installed as suggested. 'aptitude search wine' reports as installed: q4wine, wine-mono0.0.8, wine1.5, wine1.6, wine1.6-amd64, wine1.6-i386:i386, wine-gecko2.21:i386, winetricks. Application now prints reports to screen ('display' command) and to a real printer, as expected. Thank you for help and advice.
