The /dev/loop/* was root:disk(with no access to other) so I did not have access 
to the raw loopdevice. I chowned it to <username>:disk, and what do you know, 
it started working. I must however make udev choose another group for the 
loopdevices, not comfortable with having the user with full write access to the 
raw disks, funky stuff can happen then.
Thank you for the help, another lesson learnt about the inner workings of wine
 :)
I do however feel that using winecfg to set up the d: symlink is a bit... 
cheating for a console-nerd like me :P
