Fixed it. Removed the "art_cache_size=1048" line entirely from fallout2.cfg, as recommended on another forum, and now the game loads.
If you have Windows installed, you should check if the game starts correctly with that setting. If the game crashes on Windows as well, this bug report should be considered invalid. The relevant line in the gog.com version of the game is "art_cache_size=8" -> the game starts normally here. I believe this is a Fallout bug. Changing fallout2.cfg so that art_cache_size is 32 solved the crash.

Tested this on current git (wine-1.7.37-260-g4c1791f) GOG version of the game When I load the game, the please stand by screen appears and then dissapears. Nothing happens after, I have to kill the game manually. I don't remember having a problem like that when I tested the game for this bug report a couple of years ago. I have installed the GOG version of Fallout 1 on wine-1.7.45 and what you described occured.
