This was on a Kubuntu 9.04 x86 system running Wine 1.1.25. Please correct component if I'm mistaken. The game works fine after putting the d3dx9_36.dll file into the windows/system32 directory.
From where? I tried /usr/lib/wine/d3dx9_36.dll.so (based on the output of "locate d3dx9"), and that didn't go to well.
