Time to report an another WINE regression for World of Tanks, in this one screen fills with a mixture of triangles and font textures. The regression was brought by: commit 68b15bc5ffe6ddf5d08cbc13479eaf718ad5e39f Author: Stefan Dösinger Date: Tue Apr 19 21:24:26 2011 +0200 wined3d: Give GL_ARB_map_buffer_range another try. Nvidia's 270.xx.yy driver series fix the glMapBuffer alignment issues that c performance problems. If the user is using an older driver we now drop the V doublebuffered loading, which means that we fall back to the current behavio needed. Dynamic VBOs are needed on Nvidia drivers for GL_ARB_instanced_array (the patch was actually committed on Jun 14) The bug can be reproduced by logging in an account and clicking on the depot, store, statistics or other tabs in the garage. Alt-tabing in and out resets the screen back to normal (using virtual desktop). During the actual gameplay, the frame rate is a lot lower then normal. Notable fixme for gameplay is: fixme:d3d:wined3d_buffer_preload Too many declaration changes or converting dynamic buffer, stopping converting Using WINEDEBUG=+d3d the frame rate is very low in the garage, the bug does not manifests itself. We may be running into the fglrx bug that motivated disabling ARB_map_buffer_range a year ago. It would be interesting to see if this issue occurs on Nvidia cards as well.

If anyone wants to do so, this would be the first test setup I'd try: 1) Create a big VBO(probably 4*sizeof(float)*65536), and a second one with 65536 float3s with position data. Maybe even try a bigger buffer. 2) Fill the VBO with float4(1, 0, 0, 0), red 3) Draw something with the two FBOs to make the driver load them(using an indexed draw to force the driver to load the entire buffer) 4) call glFinish() 5) Map the color FBO with MAP_UNSYNCHRONIZED_BIT | MAP_FLUSH_EXPLICIT_BIT 6) Fill the buffer with float4(0, 1, 0, 0), green 7) flush the entire range 8) Unmap it 9) Draw a quad with it using an indexed draw, try various indices. Of course the position buffer, shader and stream sources have to be set up correctly. If the driver behaves correctly, the draw will alawys read float4(0, 1, 0, 0) from the color VBO. Well although i have the problem with the commit pointed out by comment #0 (see bug 27534), i can't reproduce the graphical problems after clicking on the depot, store, statistics tabs. Everything seems OK here. Disabling GL_ARB_map_buffer_range or it's usage fixes the problem.

The ways I knew to get rid of using GL_ARB_map_buffer_range: 1. Remove from the usable extension list (the patch I made you linked, thanks for Stefan for suggesting this) 2. Revert the patch that enabled usage of the extension (git revert --no-edit 68b15bc5ffe6ddf5d08cbc13479eaf718ad5e39f) I wasn't aware about the registry as an another option and yet it didn't work for you :P. To reproduce the issue, once the replay is loaded, press left mouse button to enable free look, then turn 20 degrees right from the line where cannon's barrel is pointing at. Having the dynamic vertex buffers disabled (patched) results in smooth 26-30 fps, while having them enabled (no patch) results in 8-10 fps with shuttering. I had spent two hours reproducing problem on my rig (Phenom II X4 955, GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB VRAM, 6GB RAM, 32bit Linux, nVIDIA drivers 295.17) and then bisecting it. Looks like between 1.2.3 and 1.4-rc2 there had been at least two performance regressions, one of which bissected down to the commit this bug report is about. Stats are something like this (starting PW in window, maximized on 1680x1050 screen) for game login screen - measurements are as displayed by WINEDEBUG="+fps": Wine 1.2.3 - FPS ~17 Wine 1.4-rc2 - FPS ~10 Wine 1.40rc2 with commit 68b15bc5 reverted - FPS ~14 I'm still tracking down an another commit that caused FPS drop from 17 to 14. What I want to ask is: should I file another bug report about performance regression in Perfect World game client caused by commit 68b15bc5 or not? I mean, it seems that the problem with FPS drop in WoT due to commit 68b15bc5 is - probably - just the same as I had tracked down for PW game client, so maybe it's not convenient to track them as a separate bug report entries. I've tested it in World of Tanks 0.7.1 using the replay linked above. Stefan, is the "ddraw: Make D3DVBCAPS_WRITEONLY vertex buffers dynamic" patch required prior to applying "wined3d: Do not use double-buffered dynamic buffers"? I want to test the latter one with "Perfect World" to check if it fixes the FPS drop that had been caused by 68b15bc5 commit, but I'm not sure whether should I use both patched or not. Just to mention, my low settings config give me twice the FPS when running natively in Windows (vs WINE w/ workaround). But I did a test to check if the issue is still present. Radeon driver on the 3.17.4-200.fc20.x86_64 kernel only rendered WoT as a collage of random graphics memory with music playing in the background. I ran the newest WINE git wine-1.7.33 as well as the previously affected 1835e2f5baa376eab95c760951fcc6a3612aa6cd and older commits. With and without using the workaround - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6901628/disable-dynamic-vertex-buffers.patch My old post says WoT 0.7.0 needed only winetricks corefonts, however the current WoT 0.9.4 requires winetricks d3dx9 (looks like it no longer bundles the dx dll). Testing was done with a clean WINEPREFIX otherwise. With the same AMD Radeon HD 6770 and the newest 14.12 fglrx driver I cannot reproduce the performance degradation issue (in fact the workaround reduces performance). In every setup I get ~20+ FPS looking at a geometry-rich scene in two replays tested, which is the same or slightly better compared to what I as getting two years ago with the workaround. Could be a change in newer WoT versions, or a fixed bug in fglrx, or maybe the influence of winetricks d3dx9. Well, as for a performance level, I would say that the two year old commits around the time of 1835e2f5baa376eab95c760951fcc6a3612aa6cd give ~1-2 FPS more than wine-1.7.33.
