[Bug 29816] New: Homeworld2 1.1 has no audio
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29816 Bug #: 29816 Summary: Homeworld2 1.1 has no audio Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: n.andrew.walsh(a)gmail.com Classification: Unclassified Since at least April of 2011, Homeword2 1.1 has no audio. Installation/patching/installing the no-cd patch (needed under 1.1) all works fine, but the game runs without any sound. Only error I see in the console is the usual one about "Don't know what to do with 10000 audio channels." -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

I've updated as instructed, run with the audio debugging flags, and attached the resultant log. A little while down I see these lines: 0009:trace:alsa:AUDDRV_GetEndpointIDs 0 0x33e7b8 0x33e7b4 0x33e7b0 0x33e7ac 0009:warn:alsa:alsa_try_open The device "plughw:0,0" failed to open: -16 (Device or resource busy). 0009:warn:alsa:alsa_try_open The device "plughw:0,0" failed to open: -16 (Device or resource busy). and some others, all of which repeat. But perhaps you can make more sense of it than I? Andrew Walsh <n.andrew.walsh(a)gmail.com> 2012-03-13 13:28:25 CDT --- I've upgraded to wine-1.4, which seems to have a new alsa driver. I have audio in the other games I play under wine (EVE Online, Portal 2), but this one - which is now up to version 8.2.2) still has none. For what it's worth, the audio device is listed is "HDA ATI-SB - ALC888" in winecfg. Audio test there works fine. Have you found anything helpful in the debug text? Well, now I've updated to wine 1.5.0, and I'm back to having no audio in winecfg (and no audio in any other wine program). This test worked under 1.4.0. The driver listed is "winealsa.drv." Well, that's no good. Can you give a log (usual audio log channels) of just running winecfg and pressing Test Sound? Let's try to get that working again before we work on Homeworld 2. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Andrew Walsh <n.andrew.walsh(a)gmail.com> 2012-03-23 14:19:34 CDT --- not sure what the problem was with winecfg, but clearing my wineprefix and installing fresh makes the sound check work again. Homeworld2, however, still does not :( Do you have access to a full install? I'm using the full install, patched to 1.1, patched with a no-cd patch (1.1 needs it) and then patched with the complex mod. However, I already couldn't get audio just with the straight 1.1 version (so it isn't the complex mod). I tested with the demo I found here <http://www.fileplanet.com/129916/120000/fileinfo/Homeworld-2---Demo>. I have to launch it with the "-nopbuffer" switch. You've got winecfg Test Sound and such working, right? what the…?
You are correct: even running the modded HW2, using the complex mod, I have sound, *if* I run it from inside the /Release directory. Madness!
So, uh, any idea what's going on with that?
It's probably just the way the application is programmed. I assume it's looking for some file in the current directory, so if you run it from the wrong directory, it fails to find that file and as a result audio doesn't work. If you look at the shortcut on Windows, you'll see it points to .../Bin/Release. And so does the .desktop file that Wine creates. I tried to run the demo on my Windows 7 install to see if I could reproduce the change in behavior there, but it refused to run. Anyways, I'm tempted to close as INVALID. Andrew Walsh <n.andrew.walsh(a)gmail.com> 2012-06-16 17:34:30 CDT --- Well, since this doesn't seem to be an issue with how wine itself runs - but rather lazy programming on the part of HW2 - then yes, I suppose it's invalid.
