Version 8.2 does indeed install better, but it still has problems.
There are lots of complaints of the form

fixme:atl:AtlModuleInit SEMI-STUB (0x60cfd198 0x60cf76c0 0x60c80000)
fixme:atl:AtlModuleUpdateRegistryFromResourceD MapEntries and Registrar
parameter not supported
Failed to register DLL c:\Program Files\Mercury Interactive\QuickTest
Professional\bin\VoPackage.dll

(hence I'm changing the category to ATL)
and at the end something goes clearly wrong:

(thread 023f), starting debugger...
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7efa4a56
err:ole:ifproxy_release_public_refs IRemUnknown_RemRelease failed with error
0x800706c0

at which it aborted with a dialog box saying
"Unable to open active database".

Then when you try running the app, it exits with
err:ole:create_server class {0eabb8c3-eb3f-4240-86d2-e574d40ea94a} not registered
so perhaps it matters that all those DLL registrations failed.
