I have tested this again, and this is what I see:

~/windows/Program Files/Bullfrog/Dungeon Keeper 2 Demo $ ~/apps/wine-0.9.9/wine

no game window pops up, and I get back to the shell prompt.

This time I noticed a curious message in dmesg:
can't create port
