My memory starting working again, the solution is very simple: you must run the
game from it's installation directory. Running
wine 'Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/EMPIRES2.EXE'
won't work, you must run
cd 'Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/'
wine EMPIRES.EXE
