After retesting on Windows I realized that using Ctrl to move the arrow and then
Sift+Arrow or Shoft+Ctrl+Space does not behave as I expected so it's best to
forget about this part.

So what remains is the problem when selecting an item and then using Shift+Up to
extend the selection. In Wine no more than two items ever get selected and the
selection moves up with the  item that has the dotted frame.
