When you pass through them and look from the other side, they are invisible. See attached screenshot. Note: sample_c_lz hack is applied, but they appear without it too. Game version: GOG, 1.31. System: Debian testing, x86_64. Graphics: AMD RX 480: AMD POLARIS10 (DRM 3.8.0 / 4.9.0-3-amd64, LLVM 3.9.1), Mesa 17.1.0-devel (git-af73acca2b). Resolution: 1920x1200. I just managed to build newest Mesa master, and can confirm, that this bug appears with it as well.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD Radeon RX 480 Graphics (DRM 3.8.0 / 4.9.0-3-amd64, LLVM 4.0.1) OpenGL core profile version string: 4.5 (Core Profile) Mesa 17.2.0-devel (git-f56aa25ac5)

Other times, this surfaces continue the "default" landscape. For example, if there is a hill and an area is a... pit or something like that, something that "penetrate" the default terrain will be covered with this surfaces. Also, after fixing the black ground bug, this surfaces are not black anymore. Seems to me like there is some kind of stencil buffer that is inverted for some reason.
