Running .NET 2.0 SP1 installer alone on WINEPREFIX with .NET 2.0 present (using winetricks) should (incorrectly) report success. Thanks for reporting this, I really forgot about this issue some time ago. The problem is actually msi insufficiency when it comes to determining the list of applicable patches (type, patch sequence order and status) which should be passed to sub-installer (see MsiDetermineApplicablePatchesA/W). MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa370084.aspx for more info. BTW .. that winetricks 'winxp' step is unnessary. Wine winver defaults to XP and should be reset properly after winetricks steps (unless you use broken winetricks script). failed ... --- snip --- Subsequent row insertions into Media table fail after applying first .msp transform(s). I manually dumped the transforms from all .msp and verified with Orca - most of them use indeed the same disk id = 101 -> (dupe) key. That means later msi package install operates on broken database with only the transform from first msp applied to the Media/PatchPackage tables (referencing ASPNET internal cabinet stream) - hence the failure. The question arises how to apply transforms to Media table with same disk id keys coming from previous transforms (also affects PatchPackage table). A solution might be to rebase them to have the transforms from all patches succeeding in inserting rows into Media table to preserve patch source. Though such rebasing requires knowledge of patch order. Experimenting with Orca 3.x has shown it overwrites the row with duplicate key in Media table when applying multiple patches/transforms to msi db which can't be the correct way because the previous patch source gets lost. MSDN and even Stebner's blog (Microsoft MSI Guru) are not really helpful on this specific problem (or I missed it). All of the patches bundled with SP1 are of exactly the same structure - i.e. a transform T1toU1 (and special transform #T1toU1), and a cab file PCW_CAB_NetFX.cab . The worst part is that some (read: NetFX_CA.msp) patches have a completely empty cab file yet add a media entry nonetheless. So our media source handling gets botched since we don't expect conflicting stream filenames, or media entries with no files. All of the patches have overlapping file sequence numbers as well, so we need to do offset these numbers. (And as I found out, you also need to offset sequence numbers from files that have their sequence number changed by a patch). These patches fix all these problems and let the installer install all of the files. However afterwards the installer still crashes, but it seems like for a different reason. Could an MSI guru look at this and say whether the direction of the patches at least right? I recognize that "msi: offset file/patch sequences and media diskids to prevent conflicts when applying a patch" is a mess and should probably be moved out of action.c -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

Seems like same problem, so well, it can also affect Windows developers (note this is from 2005) so a good way is to understand the best practice from Microsoft, how the demon itself solves this issue. I'm not even close of a good dev and very far from Windows developer, but I know how to google and want to help with this issue. It affects wine too much to let it go. Yes, the msi bugs analysed here should be fixed. I'm not sure all files are installed correctly, but my limited testing has shown that we can still run .NET 2.0 apps after installation of the service pack. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16956 --- Comment #43 from Anastasius Focht <focht(a)gmx.net> 2011-07-03 05:42:36 CDT --- Hello, I've seen this phenomenon sometimes - I suspect some kind of race condition when committing changes to registry/hives after doing full bootstrap. You execute 'wineserver -k' as prerequisite hence the first process start will bootstrap everything again (reg/regedit). Now it seems even after reg/regedit termination, the system.reg registry hive still has "Windows XP" at the point when the main .NET SP installer is started (-> wineserver doesn't terminate in between). After some time - while already running SP installer - the hive gets the change to "Windows 2000" (-> regedit import terminated long ago). Hence the main installer is started with "Windows XP" while subsequent processes get "Windows 2000" (registry changes got committed at much later time). Sometimes you get a more concise indication of the problem in terminal: --- snip --- fixme:ntdll:server_ioctl_file Unsupported ioctl 900a4 (device=9 access=0 func=29 method=0) --- snip --- This is where the directory links are used for assembly GAC install (reparse point/junctions) and a clear indication that the WINEPREFIX still operates on Winver "Windows XP". --- When you do full bootstrap sequence (to kill off services and lingering processes): --- snip --- ... wineserver -k w_set_winver win2k --- snip --- You must force full bootstrap again after 'w_set_winver win2k': wineserver -k or add sufficient large delay (sleep 5) to have wineserver/initial processes terminate gracefully again - before starting the installer. The "safe" variant is of course 'wineserver -k' BTW: you also need to handle installer internal exit code 194 after successful install (the user selected "restart later"). The .cab check stands corrected too. While you're at it, .NET 2.0 SP1 should be a dependency of the .NET 3.5 installer. Even though the latter installer includes the former we can't support it like that because .NET 2.0 SP1 needs win2k and .NET 3.5 (or actually the .NET 3.0 SP1 installer also included) wants winxp or higher. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.
