It crashes and probably never worked correctly. Instead run setup/english/setup.exe (I think you have to switch to Win98 in winecfg). After you install the game, copy missing files and directories to "drive_c/EA Sports/NHL 98.". If you miss this step, you will get Windows message saying "Please insert the CD". (no crack needed, just copy missing files). Next you will need to download pe.exe ("wget http://jeffz.name/code/pe.exe"). Then run "wine pe.exe nhl98.exe" (this changes MajorSubsystemVersion version from 4 to 3 in EXE's header). Finally in winecfg change back to WinXP and run nhl98.exe. Enjoy!
