Yes, you're right - but it stays normal only for a fraction of a second, then 
you have to press and release a key again. Holding two keys freezes the game 
as well.
The situation after jumping I described is different, you can actually keep 
pressing the key without doing anything else. I wonder why it works in that 
specific situation.
