Start the app, choose new game, choose the only campaign option. Choose any country (tried UK and Russia). The game will either immediately exit, or maybe pop up a map and an error dialog. Nothing shows in the terminal. This does not look like a d3dx9 wine bug. There is no wine error recorded, the error only shows up in the game log.
If I try to run the game with wine 1.5.4 directly from the windows ntfs partiton it works ( albeit awfully slow), when it is run from the ext4 partition is exits with the TParticlesDef.Fetch error
What happens if you copy the install from a windows partition to your wine directory? And/or if you copy the install from wine to windows (backup other installs first). For running on the ntfs partition, were you using the version you installed via wine? Ok I redid the tests.
I installed the demo first under wine, tried to run the game, it exits with the TParticlesDef.Fetch error. I copied the game directory on the ntfs partition, and started the game from there the game runs... It's vey strange, how can I troubeshoot this ? Actually In any case the game will always run successfully from the ntfs partition. I know this is very strange and I have no explanation for it but I stumbled upon this by chance. I 1st thought game hanged, but as I pressed ctrl+alt+backspace, before restoring kde session I noticed that there was some dialog, which I assume is the dialog Austin mentiones at comment 1. I was able to enter some map, which definitely was lacking some graphics, also the main menu lacks texts, debug log is full of "fixme:d3dx:ID3DXFontImpl_DrawTextA..." lines.
