[Bug 30981] New: Skyrim: Keys "stick" occasionally
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30981 Bug #: 30981 Summary: Skyrim: Keys "stick" occasionally Product: Wine Version: 1.5.7 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org ReportedBy: jeff(a)deserettechnology.com Classification: Unclassified While playing Skyrim, one of the directional keys will occasionally stick. This usually happens when entering a new area (after the loading screen) or coming out of character management and equipment screens. The stuckedness can be undone by holding the stuck key for a few seconds and releasing. This happen semi-frequently. Also, occasionally something sticks that makes the character move in a very halted manner. The character will run for three or four steps before he is forced to walk again. After 6-8 steps, the character will resume running for 3-4 steps. This behavior loops until both Skyrim and WINE are completely closed. It is not resolved simply by relaunching Skyrim. It may be that this occurs when a different key gets stuck, but I do not know which key would stick that way. These behaviors witnessed in Wine 1.5.6 - 4c7f6f6. I have not played enough with 1.5.7 to know if it occurs there, but it mostly likely does. nvidia GTX285 w/ blob 302.17 Linux 3.4.3 Core i7-2600K 16G RAM -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

In my case it happens when I move around a lot, possibly smashing 3 or more keys at once. I don't know (yet) how DirectInput works but it seems to me that the keyboard is handled by events (key down, key up) and some key up events would be missed by the game. As mentioned by others, hitting the direction key in cause will unstick it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugs.winehq.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are watching all bug changes.

However I just tried turning off the auto repeat and bingo! No more sticky keys, and as bonus the caps lock run toggle works at last! https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30981 --- Comment #13 from Luis Alvarado <luisalvaradox(a)gmail.com> --- Confirmed happening in Skyrim with latest Wine 1.8 RC version and for 1.7.55, 1.7.54 and 1.7.53. It happens very random where the keys simply stay pressed and sometimes do not even stop until I repeatedly press the same keys again to remove them from a stuck state. When I leave two keys pressed (Like going diagonally by pressing up and right or up and left using de WASD combination) they tend to get stuck together. Wilson <funmaker_11(a)yahoo.com> --- I had this problem until I saw this bug report. I discovered that the Unity installer - Kubuntu 17.10 -, had set the wrong keyboard to generic 101. Pressing default in the keyboard setup selected generic 104. Actually it's a Logictech K350,but that one is not in the list. I also changed the repeat rate to 2, I have coordination problems so I felt that would be best. No more stuck keys. Skyrim works great now. I have a light flicker problem that I didn't before. I suspect it's one or more of my mods. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30981 --- Comment #16 from Joel Holdsworth <joel(a)airwebreathe.org.uk> --- I've been playing the game with DXVK. I've been playing the game on High settings, and get reasonable frame-rates throughout the game. For me, I never seem to get keys stuck in dungeons - only in the overworld map. I found the issue became a lot worse when I tried Ultra settings - with the corresponding reduction in frame-rate. Doing xset r off seems to have no effect. The steps to reproduce are pretty simple: 1. Install the game and set up DXVK. 2. Go for a walk in the overworld by holding down the forward "W" key. 3. Keep it down for 30-seconds, then release. At this point you will keep walking for several seconds, and no other key presses will be handled until you stop. The "W" key events seem to be spamming the input buffer somehow. For example, I like to pick Alchemic ingredients without stopping my walk, but presses of the pick-up "E" key are blocked by the "W" key events. Can anyone give any advice on how I can help track down the cause of this issue? -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. for me, the issue was with repeat keys. normally, if you hold a key down when you are typing anywhere, it will keep printing it out. skyrim seem to have an issue with this.
I use Gnome, and my solution was to turn off repeat keys in gnome settings before I played and to turn it back on after.
That issue is not what this bug is about. It's not about the game repeating a key press for a bit after the key is released. It's about the game acting like the key is permanently stuck. When i played Skyrim several years back, it wasn't an occasional thing. It happened a lot, constantly. I also used to have the exact same problem in Alice: Madness Returns. I recently replayed Alice in Proton and did not have the problem. I don't know if this is still a problem in Skyrim, but this bug should IMO not have been closed because it's not the same problem as repeating keys. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
