There's actually a page in steam support with a rather helpful pack of fonts needed by steam https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1974-YFKL-4947
Somehow it didn't occur to anyone to look there in the first place, always assuming wine is to blame for everything :)
So how do you install the fonts?
