[Bug 617] - running configure aborts with BadAccess

I believe the problem has to do with 16 bit graphics - I use 1600x1200 screens
on a Matrox G550 with Xinerama, and there's only enough memory for 16 bit - I
believe that it limits the colormap process, and that seems to affect a variety
of software (Wine, Citrix ICA client).

I'd be interested in knowing your graphics setup, Bruce, to see if there's a
correlation. Andriy, what do you think?
